When space at ACC needs to be reimagined or builders need 3D campus modeling or drone photography, Deborah Massaro is on the job. As the college’s Geographic Information System/Digital Information Manager, she had a big hand in the interactive wayfinding campus app that rolled out a few weeks ago. Deborah also supervises a team composed entirely of current or former ACC students.
“That’s what we’re most proud of – giving back and solving problems that we’ve all experienced ourselves,” she said. “We want our students to succeed, and one way that we can help is by hiring interns who can work in the field they are studying in and get relevant jobs after college. We have anywhere from five to nine interns at a time, and we let each of them be a part of the big projects that give them great experience.”
Aziz Hussani, interim Vice Chancellor of Finance and Construction, is Deborah’s supervisor. He says Deborah’s positivity is contagious. “It’s hard to tell if Deb is ever having a bad day, because her approach to being positive is consistent.”
Aziz says Deborah connects well with the department’s interns. “ACC’s definition of compassion includes the words “other-centered”, and that is an innate characteristic for Deb. She is thoughtful about how an initiative will impact her staff and she provides growth opportunities for them.”
But Deborah connects with another ACC Value. “YES speaks most to me,” she said. “We are here to serve the students and we are always looking for ways to do that. With every project we do, directly or indirectly, our focus is always on the students. My team has a can-do attitude we are very proud of, and we’re always looking for ways to solve a problem.”
Here’s what some of her reports have to say about working with Deborah:
“Deborah has her eye on the big picture but is always willing to jump in and help with the small stuff. For our wayfinding project, she coordinated the schedule, worked with the CAD and GIS teams, and went to every campus to oversee the kiosk installations and ensure the maps were set up correctly for the first day of class.” -Holly Wiese
“She is a joy to work with because she trusts her team with freedom to work on the projects. She creates a great environment that motivates and allows the best solutions to happen.” -Andrea Kanazawa
“Deborah always speaks plainly and makes sure you know that she’s fully listening. She exemplifies the qualities of organization and communication that truly make me feel very secure and appreciated in my role.” -Jae Ivy
“She always checks in on all the interns to make sure we are comfortable and have everything we need.” –Calyne Salfelder
