
The ACCDPD is launching an initiative aimed at filling critical openings in the department with people already committed to ACC’s success.
The ACC Police Cadet Initiative (casually known as “Bats to Badges”) invites any ACC employee to apply for the Basic Peace Officer Academy at no cost to them. No law enforcement experience is required. Selected Cadets will continue receiving a salary during their training and will earn a full-time entry-level salary for Police Cadets upon successful completion.
In return, the Cadets will commit to spending at least two years as a full-time officer with ACCDPD.

- The Police Cadet position is for entry-level applicants interested in starting a new career in Law Enforcement.
What are the requirements of the program?
- Under supervision, Police Cadets attend and pass an approved Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) basic peace officer course (BPOC academy), participates in intensive classroom instruction programs and practical exercises.
- Candidates must pass the State of Texas peace officer licensing exam within three attempts.
- Upon successful completion, Cadets will work a schedule as assigned by the Austin Community College District Police Department
- New Cadets must commit to at least two years on the ACCDPD.
What qualifications do I need to apply?
- No previous law enforcement experience required.
- High school diploma or educational equivalent per TCOLE standards.
- Must be 21 years of age or older and a U.S. Citizen.
- Must possess or be able to obtain a Texas driver license for vehicle operation by the time of hire and must be able to be approved as a vehicle operator by the College.
- Must be able to qualify, and maintain proficiency, with all firearms approved for use by the ACCDPD to include any weapons platforms deployed for instruction by the approved police academy.
- Must pass a pre-employment physical and psychological exam, as well as a drug screen.
- Must be able to lift objects up to 80 pounds.

How much does the training program cost?
- ACC covers the cost of the Police Cadet Training Academy
- ACC’s sponsorship includes books, uniforms, and materials
- During the 6- to 8-month training academy, Cadets will receive up to 75% of the salary paid to entry-level officers (Minimum: $47,840).
- Upon successfully completing the academy, passing a licensing exam, and being commissioned by the Chief, cadets will be paid 100% of pay grade 121, ($56,919 for FY25)
- The first session of the Police Cadet Academy is expected to start in December 2024.
- The program will continue indefinitely as needed.
Which campus will I be assigned to?
- New officers may be assigned to any of ACC’s campuses/properties to meet current needs of the department.
