Elections 101 with Travis County Clerk Dyana Limon-Mercado

Wednesday, January 17 at 5pm in the HLC Presentation Hall

Learn about everything that goes into administering an election, including:

  • How polling locations are selected
  • How votes are tabulated
  • How poll workers ensure elections are safe and secure
  • How you can vote, or even become a poll worker too!

Dyana Limon-Mercado was elected as Travis County Clerk in 2022. Dyana’s professional experience includes working as the Executive Director of Planned Parenthood Texas Votes and serving as the Travis County Democratic Party Chair from 2018 to 2020, the first Hispanic person to do so. She earned an associate degree from Austin Community College in 2003, a bachelor’s degree from Texas State University in 2005, and a graduate degree from the University of Texas at San Antonio in 2008.

  • Voter ID requirements
  • Voting by mail
  • Key election dates

The Austin Area League of Women Voters is a nonpartisan, grassroots organization working to protect and expand voting rights and ensure everyone is represented in our democracy. The LWV does not support or oppose candidates or political parties, but always works on vital issues of concern to members and the public.

Volunteer Deputy Registrar Training with Travis County Tax Assessor-Collector Bruce Elfant AND FREE PIZZA!

Tuesday, January 23 at 5pm in the HLC Presentation Hall

Want to help make sure our entire ACC community is registered to vote for the 2024 Election? Join us for Volunteer Deputy Registrar training, where you will learn how to distribute, review, and accept completed voter registration applications and then be certified and appointed by Travis County’s own Tax Assessor-Collector, Bruce Elfant!

FREE PIZZA WILL BE PROVIDED!

A VDR’s certification of appointment is valid immediately upon training and expires on December 31 of even-numbered years. This training is open to any Texas resident who is at least 18 years old and is a United States citizen. You cannot be:

  • Determined by a final judgment of a court exercising probate jurisdiction to be totally, mentally incapacitated or partially mentally incapacitated, without the right to vote.
  • Convicted of failing to deliver a voter application to a voter registrar.
  • Convicted of a felony or, if so convicted, you must be fully discharged of the sentence, including any term of incarceration, parole, or supervision, or completed a period of probation ordered by any court, or you were  pardoned or otherwise released from the resulting disability to vote.
  • Convicted of identity theft under Sec. 32.51 of the Texas Penal Code.  

Bruce Elfant was first elected as Travis County Tax Assessor-Collector and Voter Registrar in 2012. He previously served 20 years as a county constable. In addition to overseeing motor vehicle titling/registration and the collection of property taxes in Travis County, he works tirelessly on voter outreach, training volunteer deputy registrars to register voters, advocating for online voter registration, speaking out for voting rights and reminding county residents it is their patriotic duty to vote.
