Message from the Chancellor: Support for Our Communities

Dear Students, Faculty & Staff,

Our hearts are heavy as we learn more about the hate-fueled attack in Buffalo, New York, that killed 10 and injured three more over the weekend. We offer our deepest condolences to the victims and their families and friends.

It has become clear that this was yet another race-driven crime targeting our Black community. As Chancellor of Austin Community College, I want you to know that the college stands in full support of our Black community and all who are affected.

As an institution of higher education, ACC has both the power and the responsibility to create an inclusive and supportive environment where we embrace our differences and encourage conversation. Our Truth, Racial Healing & Transformation (TRHT) Center and Office of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion are working together to coordinate opportunities where we can come together to listen and share thoughts and concerns. We will share more details about these opportunities as they are confirmed.

This is a difficult time. If you are grieving or struggling, please know that you are not alone. ACC’s Counseling Services are available. I encourage students to reach out to our counselors. They are here to listen and support you. Employees, please know that you have support through our Employee Assistance Program.

This is a time to come together to support our fellow students and colleagues. We are stronger when we work together. Take care of yourself and your loved ones and know that ACC is with you.

Regards,

Richard M. Rhodes, Ph.D.
