BlackBoard has a lot of tools embedded within it, creating what can seem almost a bewildering assortment of options and possibilities for instruction and assessment. There are, however, tools that allow broader, programmatic assessment by collecting random samples of student work to allow a juried review by departmental faculty. This works particularly well for disciplines with large enrollments (e.g., English, Math, History, etc.) in which there is a shared assignment that can be evaluated using a common rubric. Such an approach minimizes the burden on individual faculty, while allowing for a comprehensive survey of student performance. The Composition & Literary Studies department, for example, has been using this strategy for several years now with great success. <\/p>\n
