Keeping a police department staffed to capacity is a challenge for departments across the country. Without a full-sized force, public safety is at risk.
At ACC, Chief Lynn Dixon is trying a new approach to filling his ranks: recruiting ACC employees to start a career in law enforcement. The “Bats to Badges” program enrolls eligible applicants in a 6- to 8-month approved Basic Peace Officer Academy at no cost to them. Furthermore, during the training period, cadets will receive up to 75% of the salary paid to entry-level officers, with the minimum being $47,840. Upon successfully completing the academy, passing a licensing exam, and being commissioned by the Chief, cadets will be paid 100% of pay grade 121, or $56,919 for FY25.
In return, the cadets will commit to spending at least two years as a full-time officer with ACCDPD. Chief Dixon is confident most will stay longer. “At ACC, this job is more about customer service than it is law enforcement,” he said. “We love engaging with students and employees, and I think the feeling is mutual. This is a perfect opportunity for someone who wants to grow their career at ACC.”
